Animal shelters work tirelessly to rehabilitate dogs in dire need. Many animals arrive at these shelters in distressing conditions, yet compassionate volunteers step up to provide the love and care these animals so desperately require.

Libby's Journey to Recovery

One such heartwarming tale is that of Libby, a stray pit bull, who faced an immense health challenge. She had a 10-pound tumor, almost the size of a volleyball, one of the largest tumors the shelter had ever encountered.

Libby came into the care of the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County in Washington state in August. Despite her ailment, she was described as "full of life" with a "sweet face and kind eyes." However, her future was uncertain.

Libby's arrival coincided with a busy period for the shelter. Within 48 hours, she was one of three urgent cases they had to address, and as Washington's largest intake shelter, they were constantly receiving numerous new animals.

Despite the challenges, the shelter was determined to give Libby the best care possible, although they couldn't predict her future. They acknowledged her need for compassionate care, stating, "Our veterinary team is considering every possible option, beginning with testing to determine the type of tumor Libby has. For the time being, she is receiving pain medicine to alleviate her discomfort as well as unending love from our staff."

Libby's Surgery and a New Lease on Life

After conducting an x-ray, the shelter discovered that the tumor was in the bone of Libby's upper right leg, necessitating amputation. Reactive inflammation had caused the tumor to reach its abnormal size, causing her severe pain.

Generous donations from supporters enabled the shelter to pay for Libby's limb amputation, which was successfully performed by the veterinarians at BluePearl Pet Hospital. After the surgery, Libby was no longer in pain.

However, her battle was not over. Despite the removal of the tumor, she was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer, and her time on Earth remained limited. But there was a glimmer of hope.

A New Beginning for Libby (Now Wiggles)

A compassionate vet tech fell in love with Libby and decided to adopt her, despite knowing her time was short. She wanted to ensure Libby's final days were filled with love and comfort.

Libby was renamed "Wiggles" and settled into her new home, where she enjoyed playing with her dog brother and family, as well as napping on the couch.

The Humane Society expressed their gratitude, saying, "Though we’re uncertain how much time she has left, we know she’ll spend her remaining days surrounded by love and comfort thanks to the kindness of our community."
